Yesterday I had a call with my Coach (yes even someone who operates as an interior design business coach needs her own coach) and she said, “I’m hearing a lot of `could’s in this conversation. `I could do this’, or ‘I could do that’ but I want a clear plan of action for the next thirty days.”
Ouch. Then I laughed because she caught me.
Even A Coach Needs A Coach
As a creative, I love options.
I love possibilities.
I am an idea woman and I get excited about all of the ways my business is growing.
But as you know, the path between idea and manifest idea, is a long, windy, and often bumpy road. Talking the talk is not walking the walk. Could is not will.
My Coach wanted action. She wanted me to commit, just like I do when I work with creatives. Because commitment is the bridge between your ideas and results. Commitment guarantees that you will find the path.
When you’ve been at it for a long time, when you know a lot about running your business, you may think you know it all. You can strategize endlessly and effortlessly, inside the parameters you’ve built without doing the work of change.
Because all that ideation, or just being busy with the day to day running of your business, makes it seem like there is forward momentum when there isn’t. Going fast doesn’t mean you’re growing. Doing what other designers say they’re doing doesn’t mean that you will get it done.
Who Are You Talking To?
When you’ve been at it for a long time, you don’t see your blindspots, especially the sneaky ones. I knew I needed a Coach again to reign my creative self in.
I told her I was going back to the beginning—like my instagram feed that I erased a couple of months ago. When I work as an interior design business coach, my intention is deepening my work with the designers I loved working with. Those are the ones who are mid-career, who are committed to their creative evolution, to becoming visible and who want to create more structure and ease in the way they deliver their process and client experience. Because those are the clients who end up being leaders in their market, who shape the conversation nationally.
What conversation are you ready to start? Why does it need to happen now?
